Carbon Literacy for Miners:

The world’s first accredited carbon literacy training course for extractive industries.

This course provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the global mining industry and climate change. It focuses on identifying the sources of emissions in mining and the current risks and opportunities presented by the transition to a low-carbon future. Participants will explore emission reduction solutions related to mine planning and asset management and learn about the future of mining in the low-carbon transition.

This instructor-led carbon literacy course is designed to be educational and inspiring, with the goal of providing you with the tools to understand how you can contribute to a low-carbon future within your professional organisation and your community.

Learning Outcomes

  • Gain knowledge of the relationship between the global mining industry and climate change.
  • Understand the mining process and identify the sources of emissions throughout the Life of Mine.
  • Identify the climate-related risks and opportunities for the mining industry.
  • Explore emissions management case studies.
  • Understand emission reduction solutions and the transition to low-carbon mining.

Course Content

By undertaking the online pre-course material, you will explore the following in a self-paced way:

  • Gain an understanding of why carbon and climate change are relevant to extractive industries.
  • Explore the scientific concepts of climate and the carbon cycle from an earth-wide systems viewpoint.
  • Develop a worldwide understanding of the effects of carbon on our environment and what this means for future climatic and human activities.
  • Consider your nationwide-specific perspective on what these impacts look like.
  • Develop an understanding of how decarbonisation and sustainable development measures are interlinked and how this is reflected in global ESG-type standards.
  • How you, in your professional and personal capacity can contribute to a low carbon future in mining and our host communities.

In our first instructor lead session we explore what the physical greenhouse gases are, and how they appear in the mining value chain, introducing the concept of emission scopes 1, 2 and 3. We also consider global emissions by country and the dynamics of how this interacts with Net-Zero policy conversations.

In this session, we work together to understand the risks and opportunities that climate presents globally, in both physical and transitional ways. We consider how these challenges are currently impacting operations and work with participants to explore what resilience in our operations and our host communities can and should be.

Using your new-found skills in identifying sources of emissions and the potential for reduction options your instructor will guide you through a group activity focused on a discussion of decarbonisation goals and scenarios using estimation and conceptualisation tools.

Understand the key decarbonisation options for mining and processing, the role of mine planning and asset management for decarbonisation, and key decarbonisation pillars for mining.

Dive further into the complexities of emissions management with a simulation workshop using TALPAC-3D to compare the results of alternative fuel types for mining fleets.

With your newfound understanding of emissions, we start to consider what the future looks like with increased battery mineral demands, opportunities for introducing circular economy practices into mining operations and what a Just Transition to a low carbon future means for you, your organisation and your host community.
